Illustration for Marketing cannot fix a broken guest experience

Marketing gets people to the door. Operations decides whether the visit was worth it. I learned the difference while working on bookings, listings and guest messaging for a farmstay.

What marketing could do

We could improve the listing, tighten the photos and plan how to bring in influencers. Those things matter, and they move the number of people who look.

What it could not do

We could not fix what happened after a guest arrived. When something went wrong, the decisions about refunds and making the experience right were made in operations, not in an ad account. No amount of better copy changes that.

Marketing sets the promise. Operations keeps it.

The rule I use now

Before I help scale any marketing, I check whether the promise matches the product. If the two are far apart, more marketing only sends more people to a disappointing experience.

The same check has held up in other industries I have worked with, from food to software. The details change. The gap between promise and delivery is usually where the real work is.
